Sutton's FA Cup fifth-round predictions v Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight

05 марта 2026 г.

BBC Sport football expert Chris Sutton takes on Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight plus the BBC readers and AI with his predictions for this weekend's FA Cup fifth-round ties.

Newcastle and Manchester City have already played each other four times this season, but who will come out on top when they meet again in the FA Cup at St James' Park on Saturday? "They must be sick of each other by now," said BBC Sport football expert Chris Sutton. "City were pretty comfortable when they got the better of them over two legs in the Carabao Cup semi-final, but I think it will be a lot closer this time." His guest for this weekend's eight fifth-round ties is Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, who is a Birmingham City fan. The new Peaky Blinders film, The Immortal Man, is out in cinemas on Friday and on Netflix from 20 March. Do you agree with their scores? You can see what AI thinks and choose your winner from each tie, below. Knight is a big Blue but Aston Villa players Tammy Abraham, Jadon Sancho, Ezri Konsa and Morgan Rogers were all at the global premiere of 'Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man' at Birmingham's Symphony Hall on Monday Birmingham lost on penalties to Leeds in round four of this season's FA Cup and have never won the famous old competition. They reached the final twice, but the last time was 70 years ago when they lost at Wembley to Manchester City in a game famously known as the 'Trautmann final'. "My eldest brother went to that game, where poor old [Manchester City keeper] Bert Trautmann broke his neck," Knight told BBC Sport. "That cup run was where 'Keep Right On' [the club's anthem] started, and then it was sung at the final too. "We had finished sixth in the old Division One that season, with a very good team - that was as good as we got, really. "We've only made it to the semi-final four times since, and there is a Manchester City connection with the most recent one too. "We played Fulham in a replay at Maine Road in 1975 and we lost to a goal in the last minute of extra time. "I was there, with all my brothers and my mum, cousins, mates - everyone. We were all there, and it is one of the most memorable matches I've ever been to, for the wrong reasons!" Chris Sutton and Steven Knight were speaking to BBC Sport's Chris Bevan. The AI predictions were generated using Microsoft Copilot Chat - we asked the tool to predict the score of each tie. Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy (left) and the show's creator Steven Knight There are no replays. Games will be decided by extra time and penalties. Gap = league places between the two teams Molineux, 20:00 GMT 20th in Premier League v 6th in Premier League Gap = 14 Wolves boss Rob Edwards might have been thinking his bottom-of-the-table Premier League side have a chance of 'the great escape' after they beat Liverpool on Tuesday. So, seeing two of the three teams immediately above them, West Ham and Nottingham Forest, pick up points on Wednesday was a shame for Wolves, just when they had given themselves that little bit of hope. Still, their recent results and performances have been much improved. Edwards has given Wolves fans something to smile about, and he will want to maintain that positivity here. This is a big game for Liverpool boss Arne Slot, too. The FA Cup could be important for him this season, so he cannot just focus on Tuesday's last-16 trip to Galatasaray in the Champions League. After three successive Premier League wins, Tuesday's loss was another stumble for Slot's side in the race for the top four. They were fortunate Manchester United and Aston Villa lost as well, but Chelsea's win at Villa meant the Reds are outside the top five now too. With the heat that is around him, I don't think Slot is in a position where he can afford to play a weakened side here - he has to go strong to try to avoid another shock result. I still think we will see another surprise, though. Wolves are going to throw everything at Liverpool. They are still going down, but can they make it to Wembley too? Sutton's prediction: 2-1 Steven's prediction: A couple of weeks ago, I would have said it is obvious what is going to happen here. Now, it isn't. 2-2 after extra time, Liverpool win on penalties AI's prediction: 1-3 One Call Stadium, 12:15 16th in League One v 1st in Premier League Gap = 59 This will be Mansfield against Arsenal's second team, which is still very strong. The Stags beat Premier League Burnley at Turf Moor thanks to Louis Reed's stunning free-kick but, even at home and with the Gunners making changes, this is a much tougher proposition. Mansfield have not won any of their past nine games in League One - they have drawn six of them, and lost the other three - and are only five points above the relegation zone. They can forget about all that while they focus on this tie, and their fans can just enjoy the day too, but I can only see an Arsenal win here, whatever team they put out. Sutton's prediction: 0-2 Steven's prediction: I just can't see a shock here. 0-3 AI's prediction: 0-3 Stok Cae Ras, 17:45 6th in Championship v 5th in Premier League Gap = 21 I am at this game for Radio 5 Live and am really looking forward to it. The whole story of Wrexham's rise is incredible. They have had three successive promotions and are in with a chance of a fourth this season too. Yes, they have splashed some cash along the way, but they have still had to spend that money the right way, to find the right players to fit into their system. Their manager Phil Parkinson has done an incredible job because they have adapted and evolved each time they have made a step up, and they must be excited about this tie too. I still fancy Chelsea to get past them, though. They outclassed another high-flying Championship side, Hull City, in round four and I think they will have too much quality for Wrexham. Every defeat for Chelsea is always seen as being the end of the world but they got a great win against Aston Villa on Wednesday. Like most people I had taken Joao Pedro out of my Fantasy team, so of course he went and scored a hat-trick. Blues boss Liam Rosenior has done a good job so far. His target has to be Champions League football, but of course he would love to win the FA Cup. Sutton's prediction: 1-3 Steven's prediction: Wrexham will be right up for it, and Chelsea are very unpredictable. This could be a shock, you know, with a last-minute winner for Wrexham. 1-0 AI's prediction: 1-3 St James' Park, 20:00 12th in Premier League v 2nd in Premier League Gap = 10 This is a big week for both teams. In the Champions League, Newcastle have got Barcelona at home on Tuesday, and City are at Real Madrid the following day. That's exactly what you want at this stage of the season, though. We keep getting callers on 606 saying it's not been a great campaign for Eddie Howe's Newcastle, but they are in the Champions League last 16, got to the Carabao Cup semi-finals and are still in the FA Cup too. The Premier League hasn't gone as well as it should have done, but there are reasons for that, starting with the Alexander Isak saga last summer. When you look at their league positions in Howe's three full seasons there - fourth, seventh and fifth - you can see he has been successful in progressing the club, on top of ending their long wait for a major trophy. Sometimes managers are taken for granted, and if they are in the job for any period, then some people will say, 'oh we need a change'. I think most people understand what a great job Howe has actually done, including most Newcastle supporters. I am going for them to win this, too. They have already beaten one Manchester team this week, and that was with 10 men - so they can win this tie with 11. Pep Guardiola's side have won three out of the four games with Newcastle this season, but I am going with the same scoreline from the time they didn't, in the Premier League at St James' Park. Sutton's prediction: 2-1 Steven's prediction: City are going to win this - Pep Guardiola is always up for the FA Cup and always puts a strong team out. 2-3 AI's prediction: 1-2 Craven Cottage, 12:00 10th in Premier League v 7th in Championship Gap = 17 Southampton have won six of their past seven games in the Championship but I fancy Fulham here. They are at home and are going to be fine in the Premier League this season, so I don't see Marco Silva making too many changes. It would be great to see Fulham having a real run in the FA Cup. They've never won it, reaching the final in 1975 is their best attempt yet, but I wouldn't rule out their chances of making it to Wembley this year. Sutton's prediction: 3-0 Steven's prediction: Southampton are on a roll, and I always felt they were going to hit a bit of form. 1-2 AI's prediction: 2-1 Vale Park, 13:30 24th in League One v 11th in Premier League Gap = 57 No-one can tell me that Vale Park is an easy place to go because when I took my Lincoln City side there in 2010, we were 3-0 down inside 15 minutes and Vale had missed a penalty by then as well. Still, we only lost 4-0 in the end, which felt like a victory on the bus afterwards. I was going to stop and get my players a crate of beers for the journey home - but maybe if I had done that on the way there, we would have done a bit better. Port Vale have done brilliantly to get this far, because they are having a terrible time of it in League One. Lincoln have already beaten them this season, probably because I'm not their manager anymore. Sunderland are another team who I would like to see go far in the FA Cup, because it would cap a fine season. Vale are in the fifth round for the first time in 30 years, and I wish them lots of luck... but I don't see them being in the hat for the quarter-finals. Sutton's prediction: 0-4 Steven's prediction: Sunderland are having an amazing season. They are going to win this, too. 0-3 AI's prediction: 1-2 Elland Road, 16:30 15th in Premier League v 17th in Championship Gap = 22 Leeds' defeat by Sunderland, and then seeing West Ham and Forest get good results in midweek, might just change the way Daniel Farke approaches this tie against his former club. I can see him really prioritising Premier League survival. Next week's league game against Crystal Palace is a massive game, and I think he will leave his big-hitters out of this tie. That opens the door for Norwich, who are in amazing form under Philippe Clement despite being depleted by injury. He has done an unbelievable job and they are one of the form teams in the Championship. Clement has brought belief and a winning mentality to the team and they play good football too. I was at Elland Road in 2024 when Leeds destroyed Norwich 4-0 in the Championship play-off semi-final. This time, I actually think my old side will go there and win - just as we did in the 1993-94 season, when Jeremy Goss scored one of the goals of the season. , external People always talk about that Goss goal but a young striker called Chris Sutton put in a centre-forward masterclass that day, and he even found the net as well, with a clever finish. It won't be 4-0 this time, but we will see another Norwich victory. Let me dream - the Canaries can make it to Wembley. Sutton's prediction: 1-2 after extra time. Steven's prediction: We would have won this if we'd gone through! I can see this going the distance. 1-1 after extra time, Leeds to win on penalties AI's prediction: 2-1 London Stadium, 19:30 18th in Premier League v 7th in Premier League Gap = 11 I hate to see Premier League teams making changes for the FA Cup but, with the teams battling relegation, I can at least understand them doing it. West Ham will definitely rest some players here, and I don't think they will be too bothered if they go out. The first match my dad took me to as a boy was the 1980 FA Cup final, when Trevor Brooking scored West Ham's winner with a header, but I don't see them back at Wembley this time. It was a brilliant moment for Hammers fans and a highlight of their history, and I am sure Brentford supporters would love to experience something similar. The furthest they've ever been in the FA Cup is the quarter-finals, on four occasions, and most recently in 1989. I get that Keith Andrews' side could make it into Europe through their league position, but why not try to do the same by winning the FA Cup? Let's hope they go for it. Sutton's prediction: 0-2 Steven's prediction: East London versus west London. Let's go for Brentford to nick a winner, just before the end of full-time. 0-1 AI's prediction: 1-2 Listen to the latest Football Daily podcast Get football news sent straight to your phone Premier League: Spurs host Crystal Palace just a point clear of drop zone India beat England in epic semi-final despite Bethell ton Caf postpones Wafcon 2026 just 12 days before kick-off Could we have a four-way title fight as F1 enters a new era?
